Over two hundred War of 1812 veterans lie buried in Texas. They fought for America’s freedom and sovereignty, and when the War of 1812 was over, they endured the hardship of traveling west to make a new beginning for themselves and their families. And they didn’t stop there. They helped lay the foundation of Texas. These men helped grow the State of Texas we are today, and many of them have cities, counties and schools named for them. The men of 1812 became the heroes of Texas – Sam Houston, Edward Burleson, Stephen F Austin, Isaac Parker and Davy Crockett, to name a few.

And now, the Texas Society of the US Daughters of 1812 will honor them – all of them – with a brand new state memorial. The Texas Veterans Memorial in McAllen will be home to the War of 1812 Esplanade; a brick walkway with the names of each War of 1812 veteran buried in Texas engraved on every brick, which will lead to our Texas 1812 Monument.

For all they have done for Texas, it is the least we can do for them.
