About the Chapter's Namesake
The Johnson Creek chapter of USD 1812 was named for Middleton Tate Johnson. He was born in South Carolina in 1810 and died in Austin, Texas on May 15, 1866. He is considered to be the Father of Tarrant County, Texas. He was a Texas Ranger, a Soldier in the Mexican American War and a Senator for the Republic of Texas. One of the 254 Counties in Texas, Johnson County, Texas is named for him.
The Johnson Family settled in what is now known as the “Johnson Creek” area of Dallas and Tarrant Counties of North Texas in 1840. The creek is a tributary of the Trinity River and flows through the cities of Arlington and Grand Prairie. It is generally bound by development. Notably it flows through the “Six Flags over Texas” theme park and alongside the “Globe Life Park” while a tributary flows along the southern edge of the University of Texas at Arlington.
In the city of Arlington there are many historical areas named for Middleton Tate as well as the Middleton Family.
Charter Members:
Faye Elder, Sarah Tunis, Kris Rumans, Valerie Laskowski, Sue Mathos, Karen Carpenter, Francine Copeland, Ruth Shelton, Jane Johnson.
